(2,524 posts)Saw in Cambridge in the 70s. Alain Resnais was the director. Important that this was made, but terribly hard to watch.

https://vimeo.com/74528039I have seen this before and it is truly genocide. They came up with that germ for the Nuremberg Trials.
This film is where I first learned that there were clawed marks on the gas chambers' ceilings from prisoners' fingers. Dying by gas took several minutes and was extremely painful.

Shoah is the greatest use of film in motion picture history, taking movies to their highest moral value. For what director/interviewer Lanzmann has done on film is nothing less than revive history, a history so ugly that many would prefer to forget. ~ Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune
[It] has transcended the cinema to become a primary record of the extermination of European Jews during the Second World War. ~ Richard Brody, New Yorker
Its riveting nine hours are perhaps the most important piece of historical cinema we possess. ~ Kata Muir, Times (UK)
There is no proper response to this film. It is an enormous fact, a 550-minute howl of pain and anger in the face of genocide. It is one of the noblest films ever made. ~Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
