Maybe some advice?

When I was out yesterday, I pulled into a parking spot. I thought I put the car in park and reached over to get my water bottle that fell on the floor. My car hadn't gone into park, and drifted forward, smacking into another parked car's read bumper. I was mortified. I got out and looked around to see if there were any onlookers who might know the owner. I took a picture of the rear of the car. I was going to leave a note with my details, figured the pic would protect me, but I didn't have a pen. I ran the errand, returned to my car and waited a bit. I had another appt. so I left. Since it was a private lot, I don't think I broke any laws by leaving. I feel terrible.

I didn't leave a dent. The plastic at the bottom of the bumper might be scuffed, but I didn't see any damage. I'd like to tell the person who owns the other car what I did, so they can check for any damage I didn't see. But I don't know how to find them. I have the license number in the picture of the back of the car. It's a plaza parking lot, with several businesses sharing it.

Does anyone know any ways I could find the person? I appreciate any advice. Needless to say, I will not try to get anything off the floor ever again unless the car is parked and off.

Thank you.

There was essentially no damage. You made an effort to contact the owner. You can let it go. CrispyQ 10 hrs ago #2

I would definitely take the time to contact or visit your local police department to let them know. They can file a report so it's on record.

Describe in detail exactly what you posted here and that you took photos.

Try not to o to beat yourself up, accidents happen.

I hope that your week gets better!

Just because there isn't any visible damage viewed doesn't mean that the sensors didn't get misaligned with a smack.

When I bought my first stick shift, I didn't know to keep in it gear when parked, & when I looked out my apartment window, my car had rolled into the middle of the parking lot. I was mortified! Later I lived on a real hill that had parallel parking. I got real good using a stick on a hill & at parallel parking.

I would also contact my insurance agent and explain the circumstances, they can be fairly helpful, also

I tapped a BMW in a parking lot and offered to rub out whatever invisible bumper scratches there were.

Never heard back.

Next time, park as far from the store as you can, like the really expensive car owners do.

What I REALLY want to know is this:

I live in the foothills. There ain't nothing level anywhere here, so when I visit the valley, flat as an optical bench, why are the parking lots tilted? (I know, rain runoff) but just last weekend my cart started rolling away. I can run pretty fast for someone my age.

It ain't fair, I tell you.
