During his tenure as the head coach of the USA’s women’s national artistic gymnastics team, Karolyi elevated the squad to unprecedented heights. Since Bela Karolyi and his wife Marta arrived in the U.S. in 1981, the couple was entrusted with the responsibility of transforming the national gymnastics team. Under their guidance, Team USA achieved immense international success. However, Karolyi’s methods have long been a source of criticism. Even now, as fans learn about the news of Bela’s passing, many hesitate to hail him as a true titan of the sport.

On November 16, GymCastic took to X to share that Romanian icon Nadia Comaneci’s coach Karolyi has passed from this mortal world. “We have received word that Béla Károlyi has passed away,” reads the caption of the post, along with an official statement from the Karolyi family. “Your enthusiasm for life will be remembered forever,” the Karolyi family waved goodbye to Bela with an emotional message. But the fans seemed reluctant to mourn the loss.

Instead, many fans couldn’t help but recall how the Karolyis’ training methods often pushed gymnasts to their breaking point. While Nadia Comaneci’s success stands as a testament to Bela’s coaching prowess, several of his other athletes have alleged that his methods could be abusive. Furthermore, the association of former national gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar with the Karolyi Ranch training facility in Texas added to the controversies surrounding them.

1. My grandfather was a physician.

He often came on vacations with us. When those vacations coincided with the summer Olympics he would often mention how unhealthy the female gymnastics athletes looked. This was before we learned about the abuse scandals about Nasser.

2. He was emotionally - not sexually - abusive towards young girls who worked hard to become athletes

Many of the girls didn't realize they were being abused until they got a little older and left his supervision. I suppose the Red Curtain countries had a different attitude towards the coaching of their young athletes, both boys and girls.

Many stories have come out after the Wall came down in 1990, young athletes in Russia, Hungary, East Germany, Romania, etc. who were given little freedom and a lot of emotional abuse. Bela Karolyi became a coach during that era, and he achieved success using those methods. Even though he defected to the US and became a successful coach here, he still treated young athletes with the same methods he knew from Romania.
