3. The only one that ever stuck in my mind was PITCHER Tony Cloninger

of the Braves. Didn't realize it was so long ago - 1966.

After all these years I am still anti-DH. One of many reasons I don't watch much baseball any more.
I remember when pitchers like Gibson and Drysdale and many others could stand up at the plate and take some good rips.

My personal favorite as an old Cub fan was Kenny Holtzman. Holtzman was even used as a pinch hitter in the AL with the As after the DH rule was in effect.

If you were referring to Cloninger hitting, when he hit the two Grannys he was playing for the Braves in the NL which never had the DH.

The Cardinals had a powerful group of hitting pitchers lead by Bob Gibson in the 60s.

6. The only reason Gibson

didn’t hit 8th when he pitched is they didn’t want to embarrass light-hitting shortstop Dal Maxvill, so they kept Maxvill at 8. Gibson is one of the overlooked great athletes of the 20th Century as he was a star basketball player at Creighton, played for the Globetrotters, then had a very rocky start to his MLB career due to the racism of Cardinals’ manager, Solly Hemus.

When Johnny Keane took over for Hemus he realized that Gibson had been underutilized and disrespected. From that point forward, Gibson became the dominant pitcher of the 60s, and was a very capable hitter in spite of limited at bats.

Some announcer asked him once if he would brush his grandmother back. Gibson responded that he would if she dug in on him.

You were right, he was a big time basketball player i his youth.
