with most in the genus Larus. Apart from the kittiwakes, gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea.

This is a creek, off Patuxent River, about 170 miles from OCEAN City MD.

We're at least 1000 miles from the nearest seacoast, but some of them manage to find their way here. My theory is that they may follow the St Larewnce Seaway to the Great Lakes and then fan out from there. You can see lots of them around Lake Michigan (the closest one to us) and I assume the other Great Lakes as well.

They can also often be found hanging around some of the smaller lakes that are fairly abundant in these parts. Shameless little beggars they are, too. The creators of Finding Nemo captured them perfectly!

This tread will make us honorary members of the Audubon Society - we will be so bird informed.

noddies, skimmers, and kittiwakes. It includes around 100 species arranged into 22 genera. They are an adaptable group of mostly aerial birds found worldwide. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laridae
