2. Why are they called red-bellied when there is...

...almost no red on the belly - a little hint of a peachy color at most.

We get these and the downies at our suet feeder, and it is always exciting to see them.

DeForest Kelley was known to claim that he could remember a line from every script in the entire TOS series - "He's dead, Jim."

And "The Devil in the Dark" is one of my favorite TOS episodes. "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer." "You're a healer. There's a patient." And McCoy's statement regarding wanting the thermal concrete (or whatever it was) - "That's right, Lieutenant. Just beam it down to me immediately, and never mind what I want it for. I just want it!" Kelley pronounced want more like wont.

Am I a nerd because I know what a Horta is?

And why are purple finches red. They certainly are not purple.

the blush belly is probably their distinguishing feature

7. It varies from bird to bird.

Some have a good blush of red there, but many lack it entirely. So it goes.
