Alabama A&M linebacker Medrick Burnett Jr. dies following injuries in Magic City Classic

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - An Alabama A&M linebacker died Tuesday following injuries sustained during a loss to Alabama State in the Magic City Classic in October.

Medrick Burnett Jr., a redshirt freshman from California, was injured during a head-on collision during the game, according to a GoFundMe that his sister Dominece James organized for him.

“He had several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain. He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life,” according to an update posted on GoFundMe.

Burnett played in seven games this season. He transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling State.

and their won't be anything medics will be able to do about it. Too big, too fast and the human body not designed to deal with the ever more violent collisions.

Can't watch football any more, for a number of reasons, but find the ongoing brain trauma these guys -- and the various organizations that run things -- knowingly accept really unconscionable.

playing college or pro football is the physical equivalent of being in multiple car wrecks on the same day. He coached youth football for years until he saw a teen get a open leg fracture during a practice game. After the boy was loaded into an ambulance he walked off the field for good.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- An Alabama A&M football player who suffered a head injury during a game in October has died.

Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, was playing his first season as a linebacker with Alabama A&M University when he sustained the injury during the annual Magic City Classic against in-state rivals Alabama State University on Oct. 26, the Jefferson County coroner said in a statement Friday. The coroner listed his official time of death as Wednesday evening.

The Alabama A&M athletic department announced Burnett's death Wednesday morning and then sent out a retraction later that day. The second statement said the initial news of Burnett's death came "from an immediate family member on Tuesday evening."

The redshirt freshman from Lakewood, California, joined Alabama A&M's team over the summer after starting his college career at Grambling State, according to the athletics department.

Reports of his demise have been greatly exaggerated.

How often does one hear good news these days? I'm happy the young man is still on this planet.
