The #49ers have CLINCHED their reservation for Cancun
*Apologies to Auggie, Brother Buzz and other 49ers fans here at DU, but I couldn't resist reposting this!

The trenches -- O-line and D-line -- are a mess. Start there. Replace the defensive coordinator. Trade Deebo for an extra draft pick. They need bodies.

(18,038 posts)If Darnold is $10-$15M/yr cheaper, do you go that route? If Darnold keeps playing like he is though, the Vikings might not let him go or another team (like the Colts) might make him a better offer.

(31,913 posts)If Atlanta releases him 49ers may sign Cousins and let Purdy go, or offer Purdy a reduced contract and let him fight for the starter's job. They might look for another Mr Irrelevant in the draft. Or a journeyman in free agency. They have one of the best quarterback coaches in the league, Brian Griese, should he remain on the coaching staff.
I think Brock is history, to be truthful. He's an adept QB when Shanahan's offense is hitting on all cylinders, but lacks, IMO, playmaking capabilities of the NFL's elite: Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, to name a few.
Is he worth the fat contract when so much of the team is in disarray? Even the best QBs play mediocre with an ineffective O-line.

(18,038 posts)Except the opportunity cost of losing out on someone like Darnold. He is attractive at the league minimum. They need to the OL right because Cousins is even more of a statue now.

(109 posts)He's owed a LOT of money and he simply doesn't have it anymore. Shanahan would likely work wonders with Justin Fields, who hasn't been able to tap into his abilities - which are considerable. Assuming they want to move away from Brock Purdy, and assuming the Steelers are willing to let him go.

(29,359 posts)The 49ers are close even Tom Brady wasn't a top 3 QB even when he won his first 3 Super Bowls, he wasn't great until he got Randy Moss but then he started losing Super Bowls. In the early days New England was stacked especially on the defensive side but Brady was good enough to put them over the edge. Is he as good as those 3 QBs? No but no one else is. The NFL is a very tough competitive league. The NFC West had to play Buffalo and the NFC North.
I also feel the Cardinals should keep Kyler Murray as they are close as well, like the 49ers they played a very tough schedule and dealt with some injuries.

Perhaps he'll get a cabinet nomination.

Agree with Augie. Replace the entire offensive and defensive lines. Easy!

(31,913 posts)Hargrave will be back. Floyd will be back. I'd like more capable, younger back-ups in the middle.
Huge need is replacing Trent Williams and maybe McCovitz, offensive tackles.
LB Greenlaw may be done. Fingers crossed he can come back. It's a different ballgame with him on the outside.

(5,784 posts)The best team in the world can't win if their star players injured and can't play. Not having CMC was the biggest killer of our season.
Hoping for better times ahead if everyone can go into the seadon healthy and stay that way.
