Looking for a game board rpg, HeroQuestlike, Dungeon and Dragons.

I've played HeroQuest many many years ago, may even have it in the attic.

I've heard good things about Talisman but may be gravitating towards the D&D starter.
Thought I would try this with the family instead of playing cribbage, which I like but am exploring.

1. Munchkin Quest looks good (from Steve Jackson Games)

It's a bit on the pricey side, but so are a lot of board games these days.

I don't like cartoony things. The game may be great but I can't get over that hump. I need my wizards and warriors to be dirty and dark and ornate.

3. If the art puts you off, the game probably will too.

It can be a fun game with the right crowd in the right mood, but it's more of an rpg parody game, and the mechanics are very lightweight and chaotic (random chance and players whims have a much larger effect on the game than any kind of attempt at strategy).

Have you seen Mage Knight? It might be right up your alley:



Pros:
Rich, complex game mechanics
Good match of theme and rules, also very good production values
Pretty popular, so if there's a boardgaming group in your area, you can probably find someone to play with.
Works well as solo, duo or 3-4 player game

Cons:
Expensive, even by hobby boardgaming standards (again, if you have any boardgaming groups around, you can probably arrange to play it without buying it)
Takes a long time to set up and play (good and bad, I guess, but it's the sort of game where it really helps if you have a table where you can leave it set up for a while)
Pretty hardcore - you most likely won't be playing this with your family.

I've heard good things about Descent as well, although I don't know much about it.
