Related: About this forumRenting an RV, camper or apartment in Europe.
We have been looking at this as an option for an extended stay this summer but the prices seem to be utterly outrageous and way out of our budget.
Does anyone have any experience or advice about this?
Does anyone know about possibly buying something then selling it at the end of the summer?
If we can't make this work, we are looking to get a small apartment, probably somewhere in Italy. Any advice on this would be appreciated as well.

(17,276 posts)What if you couldn't sell it at the end of summer?
Here are a few sites where people list their apartments for rent:
https://www.airbnb.com/
http://www.vrbo.com (Stands for "Vacation Rentals By Owner"
We used air bnb to rent an apartment in Reyjavik, Iceland for several days and it was great. We used vrbo to rent a house on the Big Island of Hawaii for a week. It's great when you have more than two people and need more than one room.
The people we have dealt with have all been very nice.

(146,218 posts)We just completed a 3 week road trip across Mexico and back and stayed in about 7 airbnb places. Each was different and each was wonderful.
The problem is that even though the daily prices are great, they generally don't offer much of a discount for a monthly stay.
I have looked and not been able to find a site with primarily monthly or longer stays. VRBO has some, but they tend to be expensive.
Thanks, though, I will keep looking.

(4,810 posts)but I usually rent in Paris thru Lodgis http://www.lodgis.com/en/ they have everything from studios on up and their monthly rate aren't bad.
Last year we rented for a studio in venice thru VRBO - some do have monthly rates, you have to browse through them all.
Are you still in Baja?

(146,218 posts)I have found a few other sites that are not US based and it looks like they might have better deals.
We are currently over in a small town above Puerto Vallerto. It's really lovely here but scorching hot at this time of year and not yet raining.
DH is moving the boat back to Baja in about 3 weeks and I am driving back to the states for a wedding.

(4,810 posts)on April 18th, we were there a month. We've rented an apartment for this year but won't be going back until end of October, maybe we'll meet up one day.

Anyway, I hope we do meet up some time.

(146,218 posts)There is one, maybe two, in there that will fit my budget, lol.
I am hoping to keep it at about $600/month in a place where I will not need a car. I've seen some things on airbnb that might fit the ticket, but honestly, rentals are more than I anticipated.
I was probably naive going into this.
RV rentals are outrageous, though! I thought this would be a good way to do it, but it's entirely outside the budge.
I'm now looking at eastern Europe, the Baltics, Turkey and possibly Iceland. Totally flexible at this point.
Will be in New Orleans in May. Any chance you will be in the area?

(42,770 posts)which doesn't help. We rented a car and drove all over France, Italy and Switzerland and it was really easy. Think they are all stick shift though.
How exciting for you. Planning is part of the fun, huh. Iceland sounds great - oddly, not too long ago - perhaps it was a promotion - but you could get a first class ticket on Icelandic Air for $1000 - think it stopped there and then went on to Paris.
I was just glancing through my AFAR magazine and came across a rental site
TheThinkingTraveller.com The name sounded good - but pulled it up and
and they are exclusive villas to rent. 23,000 euros a week with chefs and maids and gardeners and a masseuse!
Look at the produce on your terrace
Doubtful on Nola - we are going to the beach for a week for a wedding in June. But, miss Nola every day. Are you renting a house uptown again?

(146,218 posts)I can't even imagine that kind of disposable income.
I was looking at around the world tickets yesterday. They aren't that much more expensive than just a RT to Europe right now and are very intriguing.
I am renting a house uptown. My son is getting married and the house will be shared with friends/family. Can't wait.
There was a story on the radio the other day about how much better it is to spend your money on experiences and not things. I couldn't agree more.

(42,770 posts)I would have loved to have heard that story. I have always
thought that way about experiences vs possessions. And
even more specifically - experiences when traveling vs. just
being somewhere. And food is always a huge part. My husband
is the opposite - which is good or we would be out of luck when we
retire. haha
where's he getting married? Is he having a second line parade? I know
I told you we did that when we got married there - and it was the coolest
thing ever. Bought tons of beds for people to throw out and I still can
remember everyone coming out of the shops to watch us.

(146,218 posts)There are several companies that specialize in them. They use a variety of airlines and can put together some great deals.
My son is getting married at the Lakefront but the reception is across from Tip's at Rosies. I'm giving a Mexican theme party during the weekend as well. I'm not sure what the whole schedule is yet, but it is sure to be an enormous amount of fun.
