Get luggage with a good closure.
I travel a buttload. With a decent sized suitcase, and enough temperance to avoid overpacking (which takes a long time to really appreciate what is "overpacking" , what is it that is making your suitcase come open?

(55,981 posts)However, at this point I have some, let's say, less expensive suitcases with zippers that I dont always trust. And I occasionally overpack, esp on the way home. I was hoping there was a strap available that wasnt so cheap to use a decent tightener.

(62,444 posts)Unlike a latch, the stress is spread through the entire closure.
I would imagine that any strap of nylon webbing and a cinch would be fine.
The thing is, it has to be relatively easy to open and close if the bag is pulled for TSA manual inspection.
It also provides something for the luggage to get hung up on during handling, though.
The thing about overpacking is, yes, you have to leave room outbound if you expect to pick up stuff while you are away. But, really, I've been around the world in one smallish suitcase and carry-on, and still came back with stuff I didn't wear.
Things like quick-drying underwear and socks can be washed in a sink and hung up overnight. Also, clothing makes for great souvenirs. If you are going somewhere chilly, for example, instead of packing three sweaters, think about maybe picking one up when you get there. Every time you wear that sweater after you get home, you'll be reminded of the trip.

(4,810 posts)I've had mine for years and have put many tens of thousands of miles on them. All over Europe, Taiwan etc. I have never had to replace one. I have cheapy luggage and always have more luggage than suitcase on the return journey - they have never let me down. Just cinch real tight around suitcase and you're good to go.
If you're paranoid - use two (one each end of case).
