Summer Solstice Pagan Festival has Pahokee residents outraged

I posted this in Religion, but I thought some here may find this article interesting as well.

By Amanda Ramos-Guy

PAHOKEE—Pahokee residents, church members, and pastors are outraged over an upcoming event at the Lake Okeechobee Resort and Marina. The marina will be hosting its first Lake Okeechobee Summer Solstice Festival – a program that organizers hope will become an annual event.

~snip~

Pastors from various churches in Pahokee attended Tuesday night’s city commission meeting to express disappointment in city leaders for allowing the event to come to Pahokee. The crowd cheered in agreement as, one-by-one, pastors from around the area admonished city officials for allowing festivals containing witchcraft and occult practices into the city.

“I just found out about this today. I am disappointed in the city of Pahokee for allowing this group to come,” said Pastor Brad Smith, Florida Director of Kids for Christ. Smith called the event “an abomination”.

“We don’t need this in our town. Not now. Not ever,” said Rev. Raul Rodriguez, of Church of God Door of Jesus Christ.

One of the speakers was concerned about belly dancing. Hasn't he seen Footloose?

about an event which was being held at a lake with a name given by "savages" ...

Oh, and "Hasn't he seen Footloose?" ... he probably thinks that the ones outlawing dancing were being far too lenient ...

why is it that some Christians think that the The US government ought to treat christmas and other christian holidays as official, while actively denying other religions and thier importance.
This is a case of hypocrites from the right wing attempting to disguise their religious intolerance and bigotry. Will the diguise work?

This June, Lake Okeechobee Resort in Florida will be hosting a Summer Solstice festival. The Lake Okeechobee Summer Solstice Festival will feature workshops on Celtic Reconstructionism, drumming, belly dancing, gardening, and runes, with musical performances by Lord Alexian, Hecate’s Wheel, and others. It is the first such festival in Pahokee, Florida, and if the local Christians have their way, it will be the last.

I hope the pagans aren't subjected to any intimidation by city or concerned, conservative Christians.

this resort is a private business, this is private property. This isn't some public park. What do they think that the city commission should be doing about it? "Allowing the event to come?" Seriously?

They seem to have a very real pagan-phobia of some sort.

Remember back, Paster Brad, when your elders were Pagans and the "group" that came bore fires and demonizing chants and torture cells and murdered everyone who didn't buy into their version of spirituality? We didn't have a choice, then, about 'allowing' any group to come. Bastards just came.

Take a deep breath and put up with the peacniks if you can manage, 'pastor'.
