Aug. 19, 1936: Augusta Kiwanis invite astrologer to predict governor's race

I was searching online for an astrological prediction of who would win the GA senate races when I found this. I hope some of you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Spoiler: the astrologer was completely correct.

With Georgia's heated U.S. Senate race underway, the Augusta Kiwanis Club invited a "Persian Astrologer" named Prince Mohammed Ibrahim to predict its victor – Gov. Eugene Talmadge or current Sen. Richard B. Russell Jr.

According to a front-page account in the next morning's Augusta Chronicle, Ibrahim admitted not giving politics much thought, but he told the luncheon at the Richmond Hotel that Russell would win "overwhelmingly."

Three weeks later, the prediction proved true. On Sept. 9, Russell carried 143 Georgia counties to only 16 for Talmadge.

It also wasn't the astrologer's only prediction. A week before, he had spoken to an Augusta Exchange Club luncheon, predicting that the winner of the 1940 presidential election would die in office, which is what happened to Franklin Roosevelt.
