i knew there was a difference, but had no idea of those details.
i'm sure most of the jews i know are ashkenazi. is it impolite to ask?

Most Jewish Americans are of Ashkenazi descent.

Just to add to this, I'm part of the american conservative mvmt. We switched to Sephardic pronunciations and nusach a long time ago. Our leaders decided that the Sephardic pronunciations are more authentic than ashkenaz nusach.
