(14,676 posts)I once read an article that associated migraine prevention/relief from taurine use. The article was titled something like "why do energy drinks help my migraine" but I can't find it now. The article stated that migraine sufferers reported relief after drinking energy drinks and it was thought that it was due to the taurine, rather than the caffeine. Caffeine is also known to help with migraine pain. I don't think taurine alone can prevent migraines for me, but it has another added benefit.
I didn't want to slurp down energy drinks on a regular basis because of all the caffeine and sugar and dog knows what else, so I started taking taurine supplements every day. It does help some with migraines, but I also noticed that if I took taurine during the day, I would become really sleepy. So I googled it and, sure enough, taurine can make you drowsy. I also have chronic sleep problems, so now I take it when I go to bed to help me sleep a little longer.
It will be interesting to see further research about this, especially the potential risks of dyslipidemia.
Thank you for posting this, Quixote.

(113,131 posts)It's loaded with taurine because cats will sicken and die without it. They're obligate carnivores who ideally live on raw protein. The heat used in canning cat food destroys taurine, so the food is heavily supplemented with it.
Sushi wrapped in the green-black seaweed is also a great source, one of the best.
All my favorite proteins are high in taurine, even when cooked: chicken, turkey, scallops, tuna, tilapia. I suppose it's how I got so damned old without developing diabetes, both my parents were diabetic.
Cat food is still the best dietary source. Gotta tell you, though, that the super cheap canned tuna does not make a decent tuna salad. Please don't ask me how I know.
