Atheists & Agnostics

(4,675 posts)Maybe science has proven how all these things he mentions work, but who created the laws of science that make them function in the first place? An Intelligent Designer? A God? Religion is a myth only to atheists. Agnostics who are not so certain about who this "Designer" is are less rigid. in my view. I'm one of those.
Although, beloved good men and women did exist to show us the way to live. Not myths

This is a common logical fallacy. The fallacy is called, "god of the gaps". As the human race learns more and more of how the universe works, any part of what we don't know is attributed to a god. The gaps in our knowledge are filled with a magical god creator.
Before Newton, god was credited with creating and causing gravity though they didn't call it that. Before Darwin, god was credited for the full and complete creation of humans. Before the germ theory, god, or the devil, made you sick because you were bad. Today, even Catholic Jesuit Priests believe in evolution and germs.
By putting in a god where our human understanding ends, we add nothing to our foundation of knowledge. If medicine had stopped before the germ theory, and just credited a god, then most of our medical knowledge would have been useless. Leeches and blood letting are not cures.
And putting god into where our knowledge ends, takes away the incentive and motivation to expand our knowledge. Well, if god did it, that's it. No need to research and study it anymore. God did his magical thing and human kind can just ignore all the contradictions and inconsistencies of the real world.

(4,675 posts)an Intelligent Designer. Not necessarily a god of a religion. Where do atheists believe the very complex universe came from? It created itself?

(11,538 posts)It's just a word use in substitution of the word god.
I don't know what all atheists believe. It's not like a religion where you have specific dogma you all believe in. I think the universe is the result of natural forces. But I don't know for sure and I'm willing to not know everything.
There is no scientific evidence for a designer of any kind. Sometimes natural forces create very complex things.
Instead of making up a god, or designer, why don't you just be in awe of a natural universe that created a creature that can understand it. I think that is inspiring. I don't think a magical creature creating things is inspiring.

(4,675 posts)me is the FACT that science has not been able to satisfactorily answer HOW the universe came to be. Something/someone was responsible for it. Matter does not create itself. Of course there would not be evidence of a designer of any kind. The evidence is that - again - matter does not create itself.

(11,538 posts)You are using a logical fallacy yet again. Insisting on logical fallacies means you are being irrational.
Science has satisfactorily proven a huge portion of the development of our universe. And we may never know all of it. But since energy can be turned into matter, the universe in its billions of years of existence could have created all matter. No god or designer necessary.
Matter can be created from energy and light. The fact that you know about matter means science told you....notice a designer or god never told you.
Science has done its job of proving natural events. They have evidence, you have a negative statement plugged into the limits of current scientific understanding that you are not fully informed about. That's not evidence. That's a mere assertion.

(19,339 posts)God or creator are catch-all words for things religious people can't explain. "god, or the creator" did it," and that's all they have to say. End of discussion.
