It is probably because the violence of the storms is too scary to watch.

the ones that happen at night tend to be more deadly because people are asleep indoors, and can't prepare for them. Daytime heating provides the energy for tornadoes, and the heat combined with low-level winds after dark causes night-time tornadoes.

Day to night temperature changes are more usual. Of course there are a lot of other conditions.
