(14,540 posts)But, I'd be curious as to what percentage of the time when someone begins their answer with umm or well, they're not lying.

(26,076 posts)It's not that simple. Deception detection is not based on singular indicators.
It's necessary to look at the overall picture and performance of individuals in communication when attempting to evaluate any level of deception.
Facial expressions, speech patterns, and body language (known clinically as non-verbal communication) analysed through several different categories all contribute when assessing deception.

(3,957 posts)when I'm trying to say something truthful, that might offend the person listening, and I'm trying to make it less offensive, usually put into a question format.
"Um, well, doesn't such and such mean this and that?" kind of thing

(26,076 posts)Prefacing and tempering your comment to be less offensive, is a form of deception. Not all deception is nefarious by intent. The example is when one might say something not entirely truthful to save hurt feelings. Which is what it seems like you're describing here.

(3 posts)Tact is also modifying one's statements to be less offensive or spare another's feelings. It can do that, and without it, diplomacy would be dead. Which is not to say that excessive tact can't blur or conceal one's true meaning. That may leave you having to check to see if one's meaning has been grasped. Awkward again. It's a gray area, so I try to stay on the lighter gray side of that. Battleship gray is right out.

(339 posts)Does that explain Trump's "accordion hands"?

(3 posts)You are right, that many areas must be considered. I could add to them by saying that Lie Detectors don't work all that well, and are often inadmissible in court for that reason. There's also the use of Valium to eliminate nervous reactions, and the fact that narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths don't have anxious reactions to lying because they really don't give a crap about it at a fundamental level. They justify it, as a matter of essential behavior, for them. And the myth of Lie Detectors detecting lies is silly, when they say that what they really detect is anxiety. If they ask someone if they like "murder" they might get a strong reaction if they hated it, as well as if they had a bunch of bodies in their basement. And how do they think we're supposed to judge people's nose temperature? Grab it? That may lead to a very short conversation indeed. Whoever made this video appears to have been justifying the grant money they wasted on this blob of useless generalities. And what about hot flashes? Do we wake up at 4 am, all hot and sweaty at age 55 because we've been lying? More nonsense. Glad you saw through it.
