State legislator resigns, accepts job with Americans for Prosperity

A top Republican state lawmakers is leaving his post for a job with a prominent conservative advocacy group.

Rep. Don Haggar, R-Sioux Falls, resigned Tuesday to become state director for Americans For Prosperity, a Koch brothers-backed group that spent hundreds of thousands of dollars last year opposing a voter-approved "anti-corruption" initiative.

The move comes days before a new state law takes effect that increases the time state legislators must wait before becoming lobbyists in Pierre.

Haggar was among the lawmakers who voted in favor of extending the revolving-door period to two years. Until Saturday, the waiting period is one year.
