Sexism in the Statehouse: Women detail harassment in Pierre

The comments echo in the marble hallways of the South Dakota State Capitol building.

Look at her rack.

Look at those nice legs.

Here’s what I’d like to do to her.


And that's just during work hours.

After two women came forward with stories of sexual harassment or assault in Pierre last week, Argus Leader Media interviewed more than 30 women about their experiences working in a statehouse dominated by men.

Half reported being a victim or witness to some form of harassment or inappropriate behavior by male colleagues — from lewd jokes to unwanted touches. Others described obstacles gaining the respect of male legislators and lobbyists.
