He had rage issues when I was growing up, and we just arent terribly close today.

Anger is the punishment you give to yourself.
A bit longer version:
Anger is the punishment we give ourselves for someone else's mistake; forgive others to forgive yourself.

Forgiveness is the alternative to anger - against ourselves or against others.

Expressing anger at someone else is like stooping to pick up a hot coal to throw. Maybe it will burn them a little, but it will always burn you a lot first.
