Here we were worrying about bigoted slurs toward women, people of color, and LGBT folks. How trivial of us. We should have realized that being guaranteed a bubble with no mention of the score of a soccer game is far more important than equality and civil rights. Now that justifies censorship. Some call it common courtesy, which I might agree with if they hadn't felt so entitled to brazenly disregard courtesy last weekend.
I say this as a fan who also had a game spoiled early in the cup. Know what I did? Decided not to get online until after I had watched the game.

Whoever feels that way needs to rethink things a bit.

The OP in that thread is insisting that people post spoiler alerts in the titles on posts relating to game results, but a week earlier had evidently been castigating folks at HOF for wanting him to limit his use of the word "c**t, among other slurs, in his OP headers. Back then this request was seen, not as an appeal for basic courtesy, but rather as an example of feminist "censorship."
That's my take on it, anyway.
Hope this is helpful.

(34,589 posts)I'm pretty unhappy with the use of the "c word", and I highly agree with BainsBane's disgust at its use.
However, this OP seems to indicate that there are one or more posters who claim that posting "spoiler alert" when appropriate is "far more important than equality and civil rights". I don't see that in 11 Bravo's posts. I may be missing some of it, but think the quarrel there is over the use of that word, rather than the importance of equality and civil rights.

(55,096 posts)Certain members insist there is nothing wrong with using that word and similar language. If anyone, such as myself, objects we are "rabid" and "irrational," a RWer advocating censorship. Suggesting that people moderate their language is authoritarian and no different from censorship.
A few days later, someone posts the score of the game. Common courtesy demands censorship. That people don't show adequate respect for what certain people (who clearly consider themselves more important than those targeted by bigoted language they champion ) want is an outrage.
What they justify and what they object to shows quite clearly where their priorities lie. They insist freedom requires no restrictions on bigoted vulgarities, but a soccer game is just too important not to have the results censored.

(34,589 posts)Asking for self-censorship is not the same as being Mussolini - just common courtesy, how we get along with one another. I don't think it's a huge deal if someone uses a word that irritates me and others, I can roll my eyeballs and move on.
I guess I'm not sure how to extrapolate racism, sexism, and other hatred of groups of people from use of those kinds of words. There are words that pertain to men's naughty bits that are just as nasty. I'll go with "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.".
But going ballistic because someone else's post "lets it all hang out", after posting a screed demanding to be able to let anything hang out, any time and anywhere? Power Fail.
