Does "Medicare" cover shingles shots?

My Plan D carrier says they cover it, but I have a $400 deductible. The expensive Shingrix shot costs about $200

My medigap insurance is saying they will pick up the deductible "if Medicare covers it" and that Plan D is not "Medicare" so they won't cover it.

So... Is Plan D Medicare or ...???

TIA!

So, I don't think so. I may still get the shot, though. My aunt had Shingles and it was pretty painful for her.

But Shingrix I paid for out of pocket. It’s a more effective vaccine.

So if you were over the deductible, presumably it would cover it.
And if you're NOT over the deductible, it sounds like your medigap should.

Are you getting it at your dr or a pharmacy? I got it at a pharmacy, and my insurance covered it. AFter all, it's much cheaper than paying for treatment if you get it!

I had to get it twice, as the current one replaced a not-as-effective one.

Medicare Part D covers most vaccines and immunizations. However, there are certain vaccinations that are always covered by Part B:
Influenza (flu) shots, including both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1NI (swine flu) vaccine
Pneumococcal (pneumonia) shots
Hepatitis B shots
COVID-19 vaccine

No mention of shingles, but "most vaccines" should include that.

Last quote I got was in the $170-something range. Oh yeah, they want you to get it, but they want you to pay through the nose for it too.

Here's a site that might clarify Medicare coverage.

https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/shingles-shots

Good luck. You don't want to get shingles.

but I have a $400 deductible that I am responsible for.

Medigap won't pay on the deductible for prescriptions.

Thanks!

I know it's popular to trash Advantage plans, but they tend to be focussed on prevention, and so cover things like Shingrix. What a novel concept.
