(53,410 posts)and lots and lots of down time. I need solitude and time to process everything in my life. I'm pretty sure I could easily become a hermit.

(16,568 posts)but when given a choice, I prefer the silence. It's only then I feel I can "hear myself think" if you know what I mean.

(53,410 posts)It's that I really need silent down time. I find it hard to get away from the silence but I like some people. What I fear is that one day I'll just stay away from people altogether and just stay with the silence.

(5,730 posts)counting the hours. 8 love him, but I can't get centered until I am alone in silence. My best, even only, good ideas come then.
One reason I am with him is that he doesn't talk all of the time, 5 years now. He's very smart, a dr of physics and a good musician, but he is quiet. Sometimes, too much, but at least I can think. My previous bf was gregaripus, fun, but talked nonstop about himself. I often found it borish and exhausting. Everything in any conversation was so focused on him that I would lose my sense of direction.

(16,568 posts)most people think he is standoffish but I know how very shy he is. My kids are like him.
I am not the quiet type and I enjoy talking with my husband. Maybe I was drawn to the quiet type, lol.

(385 posts)leaf blowers, chain saws, fart bikes, diesel engines. There is nowhere left on planet earth that is free of man-made noise. Believe me, people are trying to find it. Also, there is a disease/syndrome/somedamnthing that causes sufferers to become enraged with persistent human noise. My sympathies.
I've often thought of moving here even thought it's only electronic noise.

(5,730 posts)From any public areas, including parks. I have yet to find anyone who likes the noise. Most people just pack up and leave ,so a few entitled kids, usually, can ruin the recreational time for the masses.

(1,129 posts)And even then It is really just complete darkness that I must have... and a lower level of noise is preferable...,
But complete silence is not something I enjoy at all...

(385 posts)The earth is not silent...crickets, dew forming, bob-whites, trees talking, stars rustling. That is peaceful, restorative sound. The only place I've found it in the past few decades was in the middle of the Kgalagadi desert between the noise of planes overhead. Any suggestions for describing the sound of nature?
earthsound?
earthsong?

As for me, silence drives me nuts. Complete silence causes my innermost, unfiltered thought to rush to the surface unimpeded.

(1 post)Yes, I agree completely. Sometimes I just need everything around me to be completely silent so that I can be productive. Otherwise my mind travels in 10 different directions within 5 minutes.

(17 posts)My apartment is a quiet place to live, but now I've been visiting my parents for some weeks and have the same problem - it's quite noisy here.

(46,179 posts)I'm not ADD/ADHD. My mother, my grandson, and many years of students, though...
I need complete silence because I'm an introvert, and I recharge by shutting out the world. So I live on some isolated acres at the end of a private dirt road accessed by a county dirt road, next to miles and miles of public land. Silence. It's golden.
In my experience, many ADD/ADHD people are uncomfortable with silence. I look forward to reading other responses.
