Lack of experience put to the test in Kansas women's basketball conference-opening loss to Baylor
The talk of the offseason surrounding Kansas womens basketball was the amount of talent that was going to be turned over. With a roster of eight newcomers and six players with little to no experience in Big 12 Conference play, it was likely that there would be growing pains.
Through the nonconference slate, the Jayhawks obtained a nearly perfect 10-1 record, including a six-game winning streak. However, that streak was snapped at the hands of the talented and battle-tested Baylor Bears on the first day of Big 12 play, as the Jayhawks fell 86-66 on Saturday afternoon inside Allen Fieldhouse.
With sophomore guard SMya Nichols being the only member of the roster having truly experienced the gauntlet of the Big 12, the opener was a bit of an eye-popping moment for a team that, while battling through injuries and inconsistent lineups, still has its eyes on being competitive in Big 12 play.
It was one of our first tests in [the] Big 12, Nichols said to the media postgame. We dont have that much experience on the team, especially our starting five. All we can do is learn from it and learn that we need to get more physical and really dial in our scout.
