Puerto Rico's G.O.P. Chairman Demands Apology From Trump for Comic's Remarks

Puerto Rico’s Republican Party chairman said on Monday that he would withhold his support from former President Donald J. Trump unless he apologized for racist remarks that an insult comic made about the U.S. territory on Sunday during Mr. Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden.

While residents of U.S. territories are not eligible to vote for president, Angel M. Cintrón, the island’s G.O.P. chairman, called on Mr. Trump to personally disavow comments made by the comic, Tony Hinchcliffe, in an opening speech at his rally that referred to Puerto Rico as a “a floating island of garbage.”

Otherwise, Mr. Cintrón said during a talk show appearance, he would not be casting a symbolic ballot in the election for Mr. Trump, whose nomination he helped cement in July during a roll call at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee when Puerto Rico awarded all 23 of its G.O.P. delegates to the former president. (Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and they are eligible to vote as residents in states. A sizable number of Puerto Ricans live in Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state.)

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday night.

At best, they will apologize that their racism hurt your feelings -- but they will NOT apologize for their racism!

But I like that it helps keep this in the news. It shouldn't be just yesterday's semi-forgotten screw-up.

I feel I have a healthy sense of humor. I don't mind raunchy if it isn't misogynist. I don't mind foul language if it isn't targeted at traditionally oppressed demographics. I don't mind cringing once in awhile if it is self-deprecating. But I'll admit I don't quite get a genre of comedy that is defined by insulting others as its primary focus.

Maybe it is because I raised my kids on the premise that it is okay to say "that sucks" but not "you suck." Or "I don't give a shit" is fine, but "you're a piece of shit" is out of bounds.

I saw some of that guy's "work" in clips from the MSG fascist love-fest and the Tom Brady roast. I'm struggling to identify him as a "comic" at all.

It was easier to take in the 70s when right wing audiences preferred scatological "humor." Rodney Dangerfield was the first insult comedian. He lived for hecklers but he was never obvious. The darling of drunk Republicans, he was still somebody I could shine a spotlight at cold sober.

The Nazi rally was both obvious and just plain mean. That was the difference. There was nothing funny about TFG or his taste in "comedy," I imagine most of the weak laughter was "did he really just say that? Bet you can't take him anywhere" and had nothing at all to do with saying anything remotely funny to anyone but TFG.

did you really expect them to not come for you at some point? I hate how many of my fellow minority Americans in this country buy into being better than only to find out there is no such thing as a "good one" for these people. There is only some poor idiot that can be used until thrown away.

that might have been said at the beautiful love-filled rally -- which set a record for MSG -- then I might consider apologizing, but like the beautiful coat worn by my beautiful FLOTUS says, 'I don't really care -- do you?' "

Just now (2:20 pm Tuesday) JayDee issue a statement: "If anyone was offended, they don't have a sense of humor. Get over it."
