Jimmy Carter grew up in Archery, Georgia, with 20 other families – only two of which were white – according to Carter biographer Jonathan Alter. “In some ways it’s an epic American story,” says Alter.

Carter’s childhood experiences in the heavily segregated Jim Crow South informed his strong stance on civil rights. He wanted to get into office to do good, says Alter, “doing in the second half of his life what he did not do in the first half.” - Aired on 01/05/2025.
