(20,379 posts)I cannot imagine 80-90 mph winds blowing fire and burning everything in sight. Ive lived thru more hurricanes than I can remember and its frightening as hell with just rain and wind..not fire and wind.

(52,462 posts)And that her husband, Roman Polanski, heard there was awful news in his local area of LA and first assumed it was another wildfire that CA was experiencing.
This climate disaster has been going on for over 50 years (my lifetime) and it will continue to occur. The difference that really matters is how to prevent them in the future. I guess no one has figured that out yet?!? Maybe in another 50 years the experts may have a better grasp but people are people and I do not see any significant change. It is all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
My heart goes out to all the innocent victims of human greed...the animals and plants do not deserve this.

(25,038 posts)I've been through blizzards of 50 to 60 mph winds, and one bomb cyclone blizzard where winds reached 110 mph gusts while dumping several feet of snow.
Those blizzards were survivable if you stayed indoors, or, if caught on the road, you got to a shelter ASAP or had winter survival items and equipment in your car. A few roofs collapsed, usually businesses with fairly flat roofs, but people did not lose their entire homes and all that they owned.
I was also in a house fire in my teens, but we were safe once we got outdoors. How frightening and awful it must be to face fires all around you once you leave your home. Our house fire was contained quickly, with the damage confined to one room, plus smoke damage in other rooms. We lost some cherished things, but not the entire house and everything in it.
Besides the individual losses of everything that held memories for the residents, the communities are losing landmarks and all the history that they contained.

(19,161 posts)You can mostly see it approaching.
And suddenly, also, maybe embers with danger fly outta "nowhere" too fast.
Since I can only get the audio via Tune-In radio I'm just seeing this now. Ty, RWhich.
Even though I'm an artist (who's certain drawn faces in various emotional states): he looks (understandable) subtly stricken. Maybe he's not blinking enough?
Staring?
I feel for you all out there!.

(11,087 posts)I spent many days hiking around their homes. Both long since passed and homes sold. My Great Aunt's old house was near Runyon Canyon. It's likely gone. My Grandma's old house was destroyed in the Northridge earthquake. LA is not for the meek.

(225,644 posts)I have been thinking about my grandmother, too. In 1984 she moved permanently from her home here in New York to a retirement community in Western NC, beautiful area. I also spent a lot of time in both places. But where she lived in NC was subject to the hurricane flooding since it was right near Asheville, NC. I've seen videos/photos of this beautiful area which was completely under water, many homes and landmarks destroyed. My grandmother passed in late 1998 and though I still miss her every day, I'm grateful that she didn't have to experience that devastation. What is happening in this country??
