Related: About this forumDOJ Disaster w/Norm Ornstein - Talking Feds
Harry checks in with Norm Ornstein in the immediate aftermath of Trumps announcement of intent to nominate Matt Gaetz for Attorney General. Ornstein notes that Gaetz would not have been on the list of even the most extreme possible picks. He is the virtual prototype of the worst possible choice for Attorney General deeply hostile to the DOJ and its mission, a long-time DOJ target who narrowly averted being indicted himself, still under investigation of the House Ethics committee for illegal drug use and sexual misconduct.
More than that, Gaetz is a particularly vicious figure who can be expected zealously to bring politicized reprisal prosecutions and to but the boot on the neck of career DOJ lawyers, the heart and soul of the Department, many of whom will leave and more of whom will be miserable.
He also is widely disliked in the House and has a checkered background that would make him hard to confirm, which leads to a discussion of the prospect that Trump will try to install him as an indefinite recess appointment. There is no possible sugar-coating it: Gaetz is a singularly repugnant choice that points towards the worst possible erosion in the Department of Justice and the rule of law generally. - 11/13/2024.
