200+ lawmakers demand Speaker Mike Johnson end anti-trans rhetoric in Congress

Source: the advocate

“Transgender people deserve government officials who will lift them up, not attack them simply because of who they are,” the members of Congress wrote.

Christopher Wiggins November 18 2025 3:03 PM EST

Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are demanding that Speaker Mike Johnson, the Louisiana Republican, intervene after what they describe as a surge of anti-transgender rhetoric inside the chamber, warning that Republican members have repeatedly violated House rules by using slurs and promoting conspiratorial claims about transgender Americans during official proceedings.

In a letter sent Tuesday, 213 Democrats, including the entire party leadership, told Johnson that his failure to enforce basic standards of conduct has allowed dehumanizing attacks to become routine on the House floor.

“We write to you to strongly condemn the rise in anti-transgender rhetoric, including from members of Congress,” the lawmakers wrote, urging Johnson to ensure members of Congress are following rules of decorum and not using their platforms to demonize and scapegoat transgender people.

South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace, the Republican running for governor of her state, has been one of the loudest anti-trans voices in Congress. She calls herself a “proud transphobe” and has used anti-trans slurs to refer to transgender people. She also led an effort to ban Delaware Congresswoman Sarah McBride, the first out trans member of Congress, from women’s spaces on Capitol grounds...............................

I am glad to see this. This anti-trans rhetoric only promotes more hate----which can lead to more violence!!

Stop normalizing a president abusing reporters, especially women, because he’s terrified of a question.

WORCESTER – Agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) intend to implement a comprehensive plan to target Spanish-speaking churches across the country during the upcoming holiday season between Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, and Christmas, Dec. 25.

Three U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) attorneys, including one assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s office in the district of Massachusetts, one to the district of Rhode Island office, and the third posted at an office in New York told This Week in Worcester they received briefings on the plan.

The attorney in the Massachusetts office said that they attend a Baptist church in Massachusetts and is a registered Republican. He said that he does not see how this plan is in line with either American values or Biblical doctrine.

The attorney in the Rhode Island office confirmed both the briefing and internal discussions about the legal issues surrounding arrests at churches over the past three months.

A new virus variant and lagging vaccinations may mean the US is in for a severe flu season

The United States may be heading into its second severe flu season in a row, driven by a mutated strain called subclade K that’s behind early surges in the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan.

Last winter’s season was extreme, too. The US had its highest rates of flu hospitalizations in nearly 15 years. At least 280 children died of influenza, the highest number since pediatric death numbers were required to be shared in 2004.

Now, with a new variant in the mix, experts say we’re on track for a repeat. And with flu vaccinations down and holiday travel on the way, they worry that things may look much worse in the weeks ahead.

The good news: Early analysis shows that this season’s flu shots offer some protection against being hospitalized with this variant, especially for kids. The bad news is that many Americans appear to be skipping their flu vaccines this year. New data from prescription data company IQVIA shows that vaccinations are down compared to where they usually are at this point in the year......................

Flu activity is low but rising quickly in the United States, according to the latest FluView report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most of the flu viruses identified this season have been an A strain called H3N2, and half of those have come from subclade K, a variant that was responsible for a rougher-than-normal flu season this summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

That variant wasn’t a major player when scientists decided which strains should be in the annual flu shots, so the vaccines cover a related but slightly different group of viruses.

“It’s not like we’re expecting to get complete loss of protection for the vaccine, but perhaps we might expect a little bit of a drop-off if this is the virus that sort of dominates the season, and early indications are that’s probably going to be the case,” said Dr. Richard Webby, director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for studies on the ecology of influenza in animals and birds at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. ..............................
