(18,296 posts)The prevalence of brain worms varies by type of parasite and location:
Cysticercosis
About 2.7 million people worldwide have cysticercosis, a parasitic brain infection caused by a worm. In regions where pig cysticercosis is common, about 1020% of the population has symptoms. In the United States, about 2% of emergency room visits for seizures are from cysticercosis.
Toxoplasmosis
The parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, a common parasitic brain infection, may infect over 40 million people in the United States. Most people infected with the parasite don't develop symptoms, but people with compromised immune systems are at risk of serious illness.
Brain-eating amoeba (Naegleria fowleri)
There are only a few cases of brain-eating amoeba in the United States each year, mostly in the southern states.
Brain infections caused by worms and other parasites are more common in low-resource countries and rural areas. Exposure to these parasites can occur when traveling to areas where the disease is widespread, such as Asia, South America, and some parts of Africa.
