Napoleon grabbed the crown from the hands of Pius VII and crowned himself Emperor, then crowned Josephine Empress. The Pope had been invited to attend the ceremony specifically to do both jobs. The sketch of NB crowning himself was painted over, but remnants are still visible in the finished painting, which shows him crowning Josephine.
