Zelensky Fires Back at Lindsey Graham Over Resignation Calls [View all]

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired back a response to Senator Lindsey Graham's calls for him to resign, according to Sky News. Newsweek reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine for comment via email. Newsweek also reached out to Graham's office for comment via a form on his website outside of business hours.

Zelensky and Graham's verbal sparring is part of a wider set of tensions growing between the U.S. and Ukraine that could prolong peace negotiations. Continued calls for the Zelensky's resignation will likely fracture Washington and Kyiv's relations going forward, as Ukraine has expressed support for its president.

What To Know

In a meeting with the press at Stansted Airport in the U.K., Zelensky responded to Graham's calls for his resignation after his heated meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.

He said: "I can give [Lindsey Graham] citizenship of Ukraine, and he will become a citizen of our country. And then his voice will start to gain weight, and I will hear him as a citizen of Ukraine on the topic of who must be the president." He added that "the president of Ukraine will have to be chosen not in Lindsey Graham's home but in Ukraine."
