6. My yellow lab, Maggie, has been gone for a while

There is a story from when she was a pup that I’ll never forget. She was about 6 months old and we were walking over to the neighbor’s house so she and their young yellow lab, Tucker, could play.

Maggie was always very appalled by “gross” things, even as a pup. If her toy landed within 5 feet of poop, she’d tiptoe up to it and stretch her neck out like a turtle to quickly snatch the toy with just her very front teeth and then scamper away. She once somehow managed to throw up through the bars of her crate while I was at work so it landed neatly outside of her safe area. So, I didn’t worry much about her eating or rolling in deer poop or any other icky stuff we’d come across out in the country.

As we were crossing the field she scooped something up off the ground. At first I wasn’t concerned but then noticed a change in her posture and attitude. I can’t describe it, other than it wasn’t a typical victory prance or proud strut. It was just… off. She ignored “Drop It!” which wasn’t unexpected because we had been working on the new command. So, I kneeled down and gently pried her mouth open to see what she had (and to ensure compliance with the command). All I saw was a smallish brown, round butt. I reached in with thumb and forefinger to grab it and it was ice cold. I can still feel that cold little body when I think about it, lol. I’m hollering, “Ewwwww,” and she looks all panicked. The thing is, she had started swallowing so the critter wasn’t coming out. I was fighting against her throat automatically trying to choke it down. I can still feel her throat trying to yank it from my fingers. Ewww.

I lost the battle and she swallowed the ice cold, dead mole.
It was gross.

Maggie and her first best friend, Tucker, around that same time period

While we lived at the same house we were playing frisbee one day. I threw a wonky one really far into the field and she took a while to find it. She eventually came running back to me with a paper plate, lol. I miss her every day. She was the best girl and my best friend, ever. We never did find that particular frisbee.
