Proposal would give Delaware private colleges access to capital funds [View all]

Delaware lawmakers have proposed a new funding mechanism that would give millions in taxpayer dollars to private colleges.

The $20 million fund would pay for higher education initiatives. The mechanism is written into this year's near-$863 million Bond Bill, which funds infrastructure projects across Delaware every year.

This higher ed funding was in place last year, but it was less money — a little under $11.4 million — and the bulk was restricted to the University of Delaware, Delaware State University and Delaware Technical Community College.

Lawmakers have decided to open up that funding to "other institutions of higher education," opening the door for Delaware's private colleges.
