April 20 1769 - The great Ottawa Chief Pontiac was assassinated [View all]

by a Peoria warrior near Cahokia, Illinois, apparently in revenge after Pontiac had stabbed his uncle. Pontiac was buried in St. Louis, near the present site of Broadway and Market. He is best remembered for sparking a revolt of the Northwest tribes against the British in 1763.
