A woman was killed when she was rolled over by a float Wednesday evening during the Krewe of Nyx parade Uptown, police said. It happened around 9 p.m. when the Nyx parade made it to the intersection of Magazine and Valence streets. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said float No. 21 was the one that struck the woman, who was not identified.
Floats behind No. 21 were not allowed to continue rolling on the parade route and were escorted by police to the Morial Convention Center. Non-float elements of the parade -- marching bands and walking groups -- were allowed to detour around the scene and continue on the parade route. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine the official cause of the death and release the victim's name once the autopsy is complete and the family is notified.
Julie Lea, Nyx captain, released a statement saying "On such a joyous night, this is obviously a tragic occurrence. The parade takes a backseat when something like this happens on the route. On behalf of the entire Krewe of Nyx, along with the city of New Orleans, we offer our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual involved."
The last time someone was rolled over and killed by a float was during the Krewe of Endymion parade in 2008 as it was entering the Superdome. Additional details were not released by police.
