The LIE (Long Island Expressway) is the main road off the Island.

I know, b/c in 1985, I was on it for five hours with my mother, trying to beat Hurricane Gloria, whose eye was due to hit where my mother lived. If you have ever gone to the Hamptons for a summer weekend or vacation, you budget at least two hours on the LIE.

More housing, esp. on the eastern end of Long Island, would actually ruin local commerce as roads would be clogged, even without a hurricane.
