As I understand it, the whole voter ID thing is about requiring voters to show an ID at the polling place. Maybe there's more to it, but that's what I understand.

If that's correct, I don't see where the problem is. Having a valid ID is not a big deal: a driver's license, state-issued ID, passport, anything with your name and picture on it.

What is it about this voter ID thing that I don't understand?
