Ohio lawmakers override Gov. Mike DeWine's veto of health order bill [View all]

Ohio lawmakers rejected Gov. Mike DeWine’s last-minute offer Wednesday, voting instead to override his veto of a bill that would change how health orders work.

The Senate voted 23-10 to make Senate Bill 22 law instead of starting over with the ideas from DeWine’s office; the House followed in a 62-35 vote. Both votes were largely along party lines.

DeWine has vetoed four bills since his term began in 2019; Wednesday marked the first time legislators voted to overturn one.

The law will let lawmakers reject or modify any state health order as soon as its given, and let the legislature extend or end states of emergencies. The bill takes effect in 90 days.
