Often occur before school officially starts so that these conversations with the 'responsible' adults can happen in private and awkward corrections can be avoided when other students are around.

All efforts are made to get the adults on board before school starts to minimize the risk of bullying and other negative behaviors towards the transgender youth.

My transgender niece, now in junior high, had these meetings with teachers, counselors, and administration before school started each year for several years when she began to live completely under her new name and identity.

The school was likely using this best practice.

The teacher needs to read the book a little more closely, because I'll bet that she owns at least one poly -cotton blend piece of clothing that she has worn to school, which is, as we all know, a death penalty offense.
