Target to close 2 Seattle stores, citing theft and safety concerns [View all]

Target Corp. announced Tuesday that it will close nine stores nationwide, including two in Seattle.

On Oct. 21, the Minneapolis-based retailer will shutter stores in Ballard and the University District, along with the others, citing theft and safety concerns.

"Before making this decision, we invested heavily in strategies to prevent and stop theft and organized retail crime in our stores, such as adding more security team members, using third-party guard services, and implementing theft-deterrent tools across our business," the company said in a news release. "Despite our efforts, unfortunately, we continue to face fundamental challenges to operating these stores safely and successfully."

Both Seattle stores are small-format locations that opened in 2019.
