First time I saw her image was when it was posted at an earlier message board before D.U. was created, by D.U. poster Say_What.

Sitting by a large photo of Che Guevara.

The BBC article you've posted informs us her involvement with the revolution went back a LONG time. Clearly this lady was a significant part of the leadership, and she doesn't look as if she joined them out of boredom, or for a fling with Fidel Castro. She has ALWAYS come through as a dedicated woman, dedicated to the revolution.

Sitting with Vilma Espín, who married Raul Castro.

Her statue in Manzanillo.

She was 6 years older than Fidel Castro, born 1920, he, in 1926, Che Guevara, 1920. Fidel was the "kid" around there.
