13. I once had an elderly, wealthy aunt who actually told this story on herself.

She was acquainted with a younger woman who had a husband and several young children. This lady mentioned to my aunt that she bought day old bread for her family, because it was so much less expensive. My aunt chastised her, telling her that she should think of her children, and purchase only fresh bread.

The lady asked if my aunt bought fresh bread. The answer was that of course she did. The lady then said to my aunt (a very heavy woman), “So you eat the whole loaf in a day?” “Of course not!” was the indignant response. She then continued to ask if she finished the loaf on the second, or third, or even the fourth day. The answer to each question was “No.”

“We’ll,” said the young woman, “we eat a loaf of bread a day, and then buy another. Our bread is never more than one day old, and costs half of what yours does, and you find yourself eating three or four or five day old bread. Who made the better decision?”
