12. "Othering"

Religions tend to juxtapose inner group against "those other" . Politicians step right up to create edicts against "those other". Seemed for a while us LGBTQ became acceptable, colorful, interesting, nervously "welcomed in". RW hate mongers had chosen their target in the post 9/11 chaos: Islam. Then many met, befriended, discovered "those other" were largely more like inner group than the radical narrative supported. Furthermore discovered the old bugaboo in common: "deviant" sexual outlaws.
Legalized. Uncloseted. "Tolerated... *cough*".
Marginalized.
Even right here on DU, expressions of "not exposing the children" holds out the false hope that hiding it from the kids will prevent them from becoming one of "those other", apparently in denial of the marginalization that produces?
PTSD nightmares that keep emerging as daily realities, with potentially life threatening outcomes. While methinks "Don't say gay" laws will ultimately backfire, it still labels us as "those other".
