However, my mother was always a VERY deep sleeper and she developed Alzheimer's.

Strangely, there are times I plummet into deep REM sleep, almost as fast as I close my eyes. More than once I can remember looking at the clock just before falling asleep, having the most VIVID dreams, and upon waking up noticing that only about 15 minutes had passed.
