14. I took it when I gave up alcohol - and couldn't sleep at all - and it helped a great deal.

The key for me was to take it when I was prepared to go to sleep - within the next half hour or so. If I stayed up for any reason, i missed the window and I had trouble going to sleep. But if I took it and went to bed, I was able to sleep - and woke up feeling just fine. I took it on a regular basis for a couple of years. I don't remember now if there was "a loading period," but it worked well for me when I made it part of my routine, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a chance.
