(10,107 posts)bit of info to you? It may be valid that you're a Mayflower descendant, but it depends on what that is based on.Not to criticize or aggressively challenge you, I just have a lot of interest in the subject.
There are a lot of chances that errors and purposeful disinformation occurred in one of those many generations between now and the Mayflower arrivals. My sister got hot on Ancestry.com for a while and excitedly claimed we were Mayflower descendants and also had a prominent English King in our direct line, but most of the research was done by others and not verified by her. For many people added to the tree there is zero documentation.
There are a varied estimates regarding how many people are actually Mayflower descendants. A common claim is that it's 25%. A more nuanced theory says far less:
Only 51 out of the 102 passengers on the Mayflower had children. Amazingly, just 12 or 16 generations later, an estimated 35 million people can trace their ancestry to one of these 51 "first comers."
Estimates as to how many Americans & UK citizens really did descend from one King or another are pretty high, so our connection like that of many is probably true, but not proven to my satisfaction.
I find this stuff fascinating but believe many amateur direct line trees back hundreds of years are unreliable. We do have a proven ancestor who arrived in Virginia in the mid 1600s in my maternal grandmother's line. There are excellent records and a couple of early family trees compiled by a professional genealogist.
