Need advice on hanging under-cabinet microwave [View all]

We're doing a kitchen makeover - paint, floor, counter top, sink, etc. We bought a GE microwave to hang off the cabinet above the stove. However, we just spent $700 on a glass tile backsplash, and there's a bracket for the microwave that gets screwed to the wall, and through our new backsplash.

My husband says there's no other way to do it, he has to drill through the new tile. I'm pissed, to say the least.

Is there really no other way except through the new backsplash? Any ideas? My husband is a journeyman carpenter, who installed kitchens for Sears many years ago, so he probably knows what he's talking about, I just don't want to do it. What happens when we have to replace the microwave? Do we have to replace the entire backsplash if we buy a microwave that goes on a shelf? Because I will never buy another hanging microwave.

The particular microwave we have can't sit on a shelf above the stove because it's uneven on the bottom, it has a light and a recirculating exhaust fan.

It's my fault, I bought the microwave without knowing we'd have to put up a bracket on the wall. Thanks for any replies.
