I wrote about how the middle east is not a merit based society. I am reading Pre-Industrial [View all]

Societies by Patricia Crone. She talks about how "the social order might in principle be based on merit ..... as it was in China and to some extent in the medieval Islamic world, and this allowed for a good measure of social mobility..." page 121.

I know nothing about medieval Islamic history. Does anyone know how that society worked? How role did Islam play?
